The organization's basic goal was and remains, on the one hand to promote the sport of Sailing in the broader region of the Ionian, and, on the other, to promote friendship between the region's Sailing Clubs and local societies. The Patra Sailing Club, which was then taking its first steps, with a small number of sailing boats, along with the Sailing Club of Corfu, set the foundations. Since then remain the main co-organizers of an organization that constitutes the main marine sports event of the Ionian region and is amongst the three most important Open Sea Sailing races in Greece.

The International Aegean Sailing Rally is a traditional yearly event organized by the HORC (Hellenic Offshore Racing Club). It is the oldest and most prestigious sailing regatta in Greece. Since 1964, it gathers contestants from around the world as well as all of Greece's top sailing teams. Every year the top boats show up on the starting line for a race. Among them there are some of the finest yachts and best trained crews of the Eastern Mediterranean.

This international sailing event inaugurated in 2001 is the most expected event by all sailors seeking to explore exotic islands and lesser known destinations boasting unexplored hidden secrets. From 2001 to 2010 Aegean Regatta has crossed the islands of Lesvos, Chios, Oinousses, Samos, Leros, Ikaria, Kos, Symi, Rhodes, Lemnos, Samothrace, Andros, Leipsoi, Patmos, Astypalaia, Tilos, Skopelos, Amorgos, Kalymnos, Nisyros and Thassos. To this day, the event has been met with great enthusiasm by sailors; each year the participants sailing from one island to another, especially to the ones which are lesser known, are about 1200.
